SPAM® Crazy in Hawaii
By Kelly Huddleston
The type of spam so many Hawaiians are crazy about is not to be confused with another kind of spam, usually defined as unsolicited or undesired bulk electronic messages (email). The fact that many households on the Big Island still have no high speed Internet access may attribute to this fact, but that’s another story. The spam Hawaiians go gaga about is actually the canned, precooked meat product made by the Hormel Foods Corporation. It consists of chopped pork shoulder meat with ham meat added plus salt, water, sugar and sodium nitrite to help keep its color. Eleven other variations of this canned goodie include SPAM® Lite, SPAM® Less Sodium, SPAM® Hot & Spicy, SPAM® Hickory Smoke Flavored, SPAM® Oven Roasted Turkey, SPAM® with Bacon, SPAM® with Cheese, SPAM® with Honey, SPAM® Single Classic and SPAM® Single Lite. According to the Hormel Foods official web site, SPAM® is sold on every continent except Antarctica and in more than 99 percent of U.S. grocery stores. In the United States alone, three cans of SPAM® are purchased every second. On a per capita basis, Hawaiians buy and eat the most of it at a record speed of 7 million cans annually. Called The Hawaiian Steak, it is never served cold but rather reheated, giving it a different taste than the cold SPAM® eaten on the mainland. One popular SPAM® dish in Hawaii is called SPAM® musubi, or otherwise known as SPAM® sushi. Placed on a block of rice, a slice of SPAM® is wrapped in a piece of nori (dried seaweed). Popular at lunchtime and often served at picnics, a number of deli-type shops in the Hawaiian Islands sell it, including 7-Eleven. Other mega food franchises in Hawaii have gone on the SPAM® wagon. During breakfast hours, McDonalds sells plates of SPAM®, Portuguese Sausage, Omelete and Rice. Asking price: $3.39. Not to be left out, Burger King offers “SPAM® in the A.M” for $3.49. Independent restaurants also serve it. At Sam Choy’s Breakfast, Lunch, Crab & Big Aloha Brewery in Honolulu, you can chow down on the $9.25 Plantation Platter, a dish consisting of two fresh farm eggs served with a choice of hamburger patty, bacon, ham, Portuguese sausage, or, you guessed it, SPAM®. There’s even an annual festival in honor of Hawaii’s favorite meat. Held in April or May, it’s called the Waikiki SPAM®JAM and includes live music, food booths selling creative SPAM®-enhanced dishes, and the ever popular Mr.-or-Ms. SPAM® Beauty Contest, the lucky winner of which receives a year’s supply of… oh, well, you know what it is. Since its inception in 2002, the Waikiki SPAM®JAM has garnered over 10,000 pounds of SPAM® for the Hawaii Foodbank. In case you missed this year’s festival, the 7th annual Wakiki SPAM®JAM will be held Saturday April 25, 2009 from 4:00-10:00 pm. SPAM®-a-licious! No matter which way you cut it, cook it, or consume, at an average retail price of $2.64 for a 12 ounce can, the popularity of SPAM® in the Hawaiian Islands remains solid, if not indestructible, especially when a box of cereal or a jar of peanut butter in any given supermarket costs as much as eight dollars. So when in Hawaii, eat as the Hawaiians eat! Locals find it ono.
